To my surprise, the appendix was normal, but the large abscess was obvious and was treated by percutaneous drainage. I suppose that a standard operation for acute appendicitis may have missed the abscess, so I am rethinking my criticism of the surgical resident's reflex of ordering a CT scan on everybody with an obvious appendicitis.
